ARTISTIC STATEMENT
I love dance. Dance enables me to connect with people in ways I never can through words. It allows me to be free and bold navigating my space and relationships. It constantly challenges me to be the fiercest, yet most playful version of myself. Dance is the greatest voice given to me to share stories of pain, joy, and sorrow.
I wish to share love through my dance making and researching, but time has taught me that sharing love cannot be done without shedding light to the pain that exists in our society. Ego and a need to conquer has caused systemic racism, sexism, and prejudice towards minority individuals. This trauma cannot be simply categorized into good and bad sides, but it is more of a tangled mess with trauma on both sides. I believe that shedding light on such trauma is our responsibility as artists in these times. However, I want to go beyond this, and as a society we need to go beyond acknowledgement of pain. We need to bring connection and encourage discussions, to truly allow a common ground to form in our society. Through uncomfortable dialogue I hope to foster empathy, first to ourselves as individuals and then to others.
